88 St. James's Situated in the heart of London in the regal St. James's district, 88 St. James's has a history of diplomatic and corporate entertaining. In 1733, 88 St. James's was the site for the lowly sounding "Gaunts Coffee House". In 1811 it evolved into "St. James's Hotel and Coffee House" where here in a "miserable little den" the boisterous officers of the Guard used to congregate but not without "unseemly broils and quarrels". Destroyed by fire in 1813 it emerged in 1815 as a new hotel and music shop. Plans for the façade as it looks today began to emerge at the turn of the century and were completed in 1904 to the design of revered Victorian architect, Robert Norman Shaw. Royal & Sun Alliance owned the building from 1903 until 2004 and during 1999 the Regency Style building was extensively refurbished and restored to offer a first class facility for the company. In its unique position opposite St. James's Palace and facing down Pall Mall, the building offers exclusive facilities for events, parties, launches and conferences. Two large spaces are available for hire offering a first class facility. Upper Hall dimensions measure 2625 square ft (243.9 sq m) |
